When in France, do as the French do... (Credit: The Alieness) While you’re traveling across Europe, language may pose a little bit of a problem. But don’t worry. You can make yourself understood and overcome language barriers by following some of these tips:
- It’s a good idea to speak slowly and politely to make yourself understood to the local people. Use simple words and sentences and pronounce each word clearly.
- Don’t use slag and abstain from using abbreviations because these can baffle Europeans.
- Try using internationally understood words.
- You can exaggerate the local accent and use hand signals and body language to communicate with Europeans.
- Read time schedules, posters, multilingual signs, graffiti in bathrooms, and newspaper headlines. Develop your ear for foreign languages by tuning in to the other languages on a multilingual tour.
- Use pen and paper to express yourself. Write down words and numbers because the written word is much simpler to understand.
- You will have a great time in Europe if you quit worrying about overcoming language barriers and less self-conscious. Relax and have fun!
